* How to recognize the offshore current and escape skills when swimming for tourists

Offshore current is a strong current that flows from the shore towards the sea. The waves will hit and bring the sea water to the shore, but as the sea water is continuously brought to the shore, they gather into a current that goes back to the sea. Where the current is far from the shore is calm water, almost no waves. Offshore currents are a common phenomenon in beaches and are the main cause of tragic accidents for tourists. The average velocity of the current can vary from 0.5 m to 1 m/s, then no one can swim against it to reach the shore. Sometimes due to sudden changes in sea waves, the offshore current speed can be up to 2.5 m/s, faster than the swimming speed of an Olympic swimmer. Offshore currents are usually narrow, with a width of about 1-3 m.

Currents far from the shore are extremely dangerous because it pulls swimmers away from the shore, making swimmers exhausted and then drowned by trying to swim against the current far from the shore. This line is usually stable, but can also change continuously on an hourly basis. Besides, panic makes swimmers no longer able to make accurate judgments.

For non-swimmers, the currents away from the shore can pull them deeper even if they are standing at hip level. At that time, people who cannot swim will panic and may drown.

The water surface where the current is far from the shore is usually calm, with few waves, so it often makes people misunderstand that it is a safe place. People will move to bathing there instead of bathing where there are safety signs. When swimmers swim into that offshore current, they can immediately be swept out to sea.

* Identification of offshore currents

Before entering the sea, visitors should spend about 5-10 minutes to identify the offshore current thanks to the following characteristics:

- Darker in color because the water is deeper there.

- There is calmer water surface, often with smaller waves.

- Occasionally, debris or bubbles can be seen floating on the surface of the currents far from the shore and drifting into the sea.

* How to get out of the current

Offshore currents do not pull people into the water, only pull swimmers away from the shore and will often bring swimmers into areas with silvery waves and waves will bring them back to shore. If you find yourself in this situation, try to do the following:

- Stay calm, don't panic.

- Absolutely do not try to swim against the current to reach the shore.

- For good swimmers, swim parallel to the shore, usually heading for the "silver head" waves and let the waves bring you to the shore.

- For those who do not know how to swim or are weak, cannot afford to escape against the current, let yourself float with the current. When the current is over, try to swim parallel to the shore and signal for help from people nearby.

- Should swim in areas with lifeguards and swim in a safe area, need to observe safety indicators and if necessary, talk to lifeguards to know the characteristics of the beach you are about to get off. take a shower. In addition, to ensure that when bathing, visitors should learn to swim and should not swim alone. If you are not sure about the safety, it is best not to go to the beach to bathe.
