Co To island district is located in the Northeast of Quang Ninh province. Co To district was established under Decree No. 28/ND-CP dated March 28, 1994 of the Prime Minister "On changing the name of Cam Pha district to Van Don district, At the same time, the Co To archipelago (including 2 communes: Thanh Lan and Co To) was separated to establish Co To district. August 25, 1999, The Government issued Decree No. 83/ND-CP establishing Co To town and changing the name of old Co To commune to Dong Tien commune. Co To is an archipelago with 71 large and small islands. Of these, there are 3 inhabited islands (Co To Lon island, Thanh Lan island and Tran island). Located in the Gulf of Tonkin, 60 nautical miles from the mainland, The entire district's location is at 107035 East longitude, 21015' North latitude, with a natural area of 4,620 hectares. The North borders the waters of Vinh Thuc island in Mong Cai city and Cai Chien island in Hai Ha district; The West borders Van Hai sea in Van Don district; The South borders the waters of Bach Long Vi island, Hai Phong city; The East borders international waters, The total length of the maritime border with China is nearly 200 km from the coast of Tran Island to the east of Bach Long Vi Island - Hai Phong. It is the latest district to be established, has the smallest population, and the smallest area. The terrain is the most complex of all districts of Quang Ninh province but holds a very important position in the Northeast coast of the country.
